Project Highlights

Objective

To become a low-cost producer of high-purity, high-value manganese products for supply to the US battery, steel and speciality alloy industries.

US domestic supply advantage

  • Manganese is used in steel, battery and electric vehicle production, as well as other renewable energy applications.
  • There is currently no domestic supply and no active mines in North America, which is why it is listed as a critical mineral in the US and Canada (Canada-US Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals Collaboration (2020).
  • The global Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD)1 and Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (MSM)2 markets are forecast to grow at a 7.0% and 8.2% CAGR respectively to 2025 driven mainly by batteries and EVs.

Mineral Resource

Emily has an Indicated Mineral Resource estimate of 5.68Mt of 19.2% Mn and 23.02% Fe together with an Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of 777.8Kt of 22.48% Mn and 22.15% Fe

Calculated by Barr Engineering Company June 2022

“The resource defined by Barr Engineering represents only a small portion of a large manganese-iron deposit which extends along strike and down-dip and which was outlined by Pickands Mather and US Steel during step-out drilling in the 1940s and 1950s.”
North Star Manganese Inc NI 43-101 Technical Report, June 12, 2022.

  1. Mineral Resources are not Mineral Reserves and do not have demonstrated economic viability. The Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resources in this estimate have a lower level of confidence than that applied to a Mineral Reserve. It is reasonably expected that the majority of the Indicated Mineral Resource could be upgraded to Measured Mineral Resource with continued exploration.
  2. The Mineral Resource Estimate incorporates drilling results from two separate drilling programs in 2011 and 2012 for 7 diamond drill core holes using an inverse distance squared method and a 10% manganese weight percent cutoff.
  3. Mineral Resource tonnage and grades are reported as undiluted.
  4. Mineral Resource tonnage and contained metal have been rounded to reflect the accuracy of the estimate and numbers may not add due to rounding.
  5. This Mineral Resource was estimated using the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves, Definitions and Guidelines prepared by the CIM Standing Committee on Reserve Definitions and adopted by CIM Council.
  6. This Mineral Resource Estimate was prepared under the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 “Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects” of the Canadian Securities Administrators by Mr. Brad M. Dunn CPG, Senior Mining Geologist, Barr Engineering Company and has an effective date of June 12, 2020.

According to the USGS:

The Emily District may contain the largest and highest-grade manganese deposits in the Northern Hemisphere

Asset

Completed to date: US$23 million invested in the Emily Project resulting in important technical studies, exploratory drilling, process development and benchmark pilot process to produce MnCO3, Electrolytic Manganese (EMM) and Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD).

A processing plant with pumping equipment, a tension storage building and transport and storage facilities, drainage basins and local road improvements have been completed at site.
